Novasure Endometrial Ablation:
An Exciting New Alternative For Patients with Heavy Periods

There are many patients in our practice that are frustrated by the heavy character of their periods, but don’t want to have a hysterectomy or return to birth control pills.

As physicians, an alternative in specially selected patients for the past 10 years or so has been endometrial ablation, or burning the uterine lining or endometrium, which results in periods that either cease or become considerably lighter. The frustration from a physician standpoint has been the tedious and difficult nature of the procedure and the variable results from patient to patient.

The Novasure endometrial ablation device has eliminated many of technical difficulties with endometrial ablation and the reports thus far reveal superior results. The Novasure device uses radio-frequency energy to ablate only the most inner portion of the uterine lining, resulting in a 80-90% ammenorhea (absent periods) rate and an even higher oligomenorhea (light or absent period) rate. The procedure takes 15-20 minutes to do as an outpatient surgery and involves little post operative discomfort for the patient.

Ideal patients for the procedure are those patients that are not having other problems with pain, patients that do not have large fibroids and patients that are sure they are not interested in future pregnancy. Before the procedure, a pelvic ultrasound and an endometrial biopsy should be done in the office, to be certain no underlying problems are found.

The Novasure website, www.Novasure.com has an excellent review of the procedure and patient testimonials. If you would like more information on the procedure, please make an appointment with one of our doctors. Request an appointment on-line
