Don’t Forget Your Breast Exam! It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month
- Posted on: Oct 15 2017
It’s October which means that although your little’s are getting dressed up for Halloween and you have more fake cobwebs than you know what to do with, it’s also breast cancer awareness month. In the United States alone, the American Cancer Society estimates that about 1 in 8 women will get diagnosed with breast cancer during her lifetime. Just like with all forms of cancer, early detection is key.
One of the best ways to detect breast cancer early on? With a self-examination. Each month or even every week if you’re feeling up to it, give yourself an exam in the shower. To examine your breasts, take your index and middle finger and gently massage around all portions of your breasts and under your armpit. Are there any lumps or abnormalities that you can feel? Are they sore or tender to the touch? These may be indications of something like a cyst or lump that needs to be examined by our Camelback Women’s Health office.
Here at Camelback Women’s Health, we use 3D mammography to take images of the breasts and breast tissues. By getting a 3D look at your breasts, it’s easier for us to spot any abnormalities and rule out things that aren’t anything to worry about. If you are over the age of 50, it is recommended that you start getting a mammogram every 1-2 years on average. If, however, you have a family history of breast cancer, you may need to start getting mammograms in your 40’s or earlier.
Take preventative measures this month and every month was moving forward by conducting a monthly self-examination and getting a regular mammogram.
Celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness month by getting a mammogram! Contact our Camelback Women’s Health office today to schedule your next mammogram.
