Why You Should Get STD Testing Before Valentine’s Day
- Posted on: Feb 13 2019
With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, there is no better time to be intimate with your significant other than on this holiday. However, if you and your partner have just met each other then you may not be familiar with each other’s sexual history which may put you at a high risk of getting an STD. Before you seal the deal on Valentine’s Day, consider having both you and your partner tested for STDs and STI’s. Let’s take a closer look at why STD testing is so important.
There Aren’t Always Symptoms
One of the biggest reasons why we encourage patients to get regularly tested for STD’s is because they usually don’t have symptoms which makes it hard for people to know if they are infected. With regular testing, you will be able to identify whether or not you do, in fact, have an STD or STI.
Condoms Aren’t Always Perfect
If you have multiple sexual partners and are having protected sex using condoms, we still encourage you to get tested because you can still contract STDs.
They Are Hard to Cure
Just like with anything, it’s easier to treat STDs when we catch them in the early stages. For the most part, STD’s can be treated, but they can’t be cured. HIV and genital warts currently don’t have a cure but STDs like gonorrhea, chlamydia and syphilis can usually be treated with antibiotics.
How Are They Tested?
Typically patients are tested for STD’s with both a urine sample and either a penis or cervix swab. Then, these tests are sent off to the lab for testing. If you do get a positive test result, we will work with you regarding what treatment options will be the most effective for you.
Before you get intimate with a new partner this Valentine’s Day, make sure that you and your partner get tested. And, if you still don’t have your results back, consider moving your Valentine’s Day date to a few days later so that you both have the results. Remember that if either of you do get positive results that they can always be treated. To learn more, contact us at our Phoenix office at 602-494-5050.
