Zika Virus Warning
- Posted on: Jul 27 2017
New information was released today regarding the Zika virus.
This virus is spread through bites by the Aedes mosquito and is found primarily in Central America, South America, Mexico, Caribbean and Puerto Rico. There have been recently reported cases within the United States, of which all infected individuals had recently traveled to the above areas. Symptoms include fever, rash and joint pain but it is often asymptomatic. The major concern is related to pregnant women and the potential for the birth defect microcephaly, which is the underdevelopment of the head and brain and usually results in severe disabilities or death. For this reason, the CDC is recommending that pregnant women DO NOT travel to these areas until further notice.
