What to Know About Vaginal Ultrasounds
- Posted on: Apr 15 2019
If you have ever had an abdominal ultrasound then you know just how easy they are. In fact, the only thing that patients complain of is having a full bladder which can sometimes be uncomfortable. If, however, we have ordered a vaginal ultrasound for you, you may not know quite what to expect. To make sure the you come into our office feeling a little bit more informed, let’s go over a few basics of what you can expect from your vaginal ultrasound.Â
What’s a Vaginal Ultrasound?
A vaginal ultrasound is a scan that is performed through the vagina by using a slender vaginal transducer. By slowly inserting this transducer into the vagina, it will give us more detailed images than a traditional abdominal ultrasound.
What’s a Vaginal Ultrasound Used For?
Typically, we will have a vaginal ultrasound ordered for patients who are experiencing any of the following:
- Infertility
- Early Pregnancy
- Retroverted Uterus
- Are post-menopausal
- Are unable to maintain a full bladder
What Does It Feel Like?
The good news is that a vaginal ultrasound shouldn’t hurt when it is inserted into the vagina. Most patients experience a bit of pressure similar to sexual intercourse but it shouldn’t be painful.
